Schweikart graduated from Arizona State University in 1972 with a B.A. in Political science. He entered the ASU Master’s program in 1977, writing a national Phi Alpha Theta prize-winning article on the Peary diaries. He wrote in 2002:
He received his M.A. in History in 1980. He then received a Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1983.
Born in Mesa, Arizona to a cattle ranching family, Schweikart attended Arizona State University for his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1984. By the time he had graduated, Schweikart had already written two books and several academic articles as a graduate student.
In 1999 he published a history of American business, The Entrepreneurial Adventure. In 2004 he co-authored the book A Patriot’s History of the United States with Michael Allen. In 2006, he published America’s Victories. In 2008, he published 48 Liberal Lies About American History.
Schweikart took a one-year position at the University of Wisconsin–Richland Center. In 1985, he received an appointment to the University of Dayton. There he taught business and economic history, then military history. He was a full professor, and in 1987 was honored for outstanding scholarship. Schweikart retired in 2016.
During the 2018 mid-term elections, Schweikart posted a tweet that went viral which falsely claimed that Beto O’Rourke was sending busloads of illegal immigrants to polling booths and paying them $100 to vote. Asked where he got this information, Schweikart said he saw a headline on “freerepublic.com”. Asked whether he was concerned if the information was true or not, he responded, “Well, it’s just a report. Hey, fake news, right? I’m only countering what goes on on the other side. The New York Times has yet to retract one in a billion articles so, no, it wouldn’t bother me.”
