Best remembered for such 1960s hits as “Corrine, Corrina” and “Tell Laura I Love Her,” this popular singer first ranked on the Billboard Top 40 with his 1959 track “The Wonder of You.”
After recovering from a childhood bout of polio, he began pursuing his singing career. In the late 1950s, he signed with RCA Victor Records.
After retiring from music in the 1970s, he pursued a second career as a Baptist minister.
A native of Denton, Texas, he later settled in Los Angeles, California and Nashville, Tennessee. When he died of cancer in Smyrna, Tennessee, he was survived by his wife and seven children.
He and Elvis Presley were musical contemporaries and friends. In 1970, Presley covered Peterson’s hit “The Wonder of You.”
