This Mississippi businessman was murdered after attempting to register to vote and subsequently discussing with local officials the fact that he had witnessed the homicide of a fellow African American man by a white politician.
He enlisted in the United States Army in the last years of World War II.
Decades after his death, Allen’s murder remained unsolved; however, several investigations pointed to a local sheriff as a likely suspect.
He was born and raised in the farming community of Amite County, Mississippi. His marriage to Elizabeth Allen resulted in four children.
On the urging of civil rights activist Julian Bond, Allen, who had witnessed the murder of another activist, Herbert Lee, alerted authorities to the identity of the murderer. Tragically, this act resulted in Allen’s own death.
