Composer Frederick Delius’ amanuensis from 1928 until 1934. He contributed a great deal of vision to Delius’ work.
He was appointed organist at Holy Trinity Church when he was 12. He was a largely self-taught composer.
His time with Delius was fraught with tension, given Delius’ mercurial personality and their personal religious differences. He served as Delius’ nurse as the composer’s life faded away and accompanied his body back to England.
He married Rowena Marshall in 1944.
He and Delius’ relationship was dramatized for the 1968 BBC production “Songs of Summer,” which was produced and directed by Ken Russell.
