Shou-Chuan Lee Biography

Shou-Chuan Lee (born 29 April 1955) is from Ruifang, Taiwan. He graduated from Feng Chia University with an undergraduate degree in Economics. Lee is a producer, A&R, songwriter, and Taiwan folk songs activist in the Taiwanese music industry.

In 1986, Lee released his solo album “8 and ½ 8又二分之一”. He thought folk songs had a really simple music format that was innocent yet the lyrics were too immature. Therefore, Lee wanted to produce an album that can reflect on society issues and start conversations among people. He positioned the album as “literary rock”, and invited many writers for the lyrics, such as Dachun Zhang, Nien-Jen Wu, Hung-Tze Jan, Ke Hua Chen, etc. The detailed observations and objective criticism these writers were able to present in the lyrics made every song a snapshot of people’s daily lives. Lee took his time to think, write, and accumulate his works for the album during the years from 1985 to 1986. The issues that were discussed included the disappointment in morality of men (8 and ½ 8又二分之一), crisis of teenagers (Jan Ling Xi Men Ding 佔領西門町), hopes and disappointments towards the future (Wei Lai De Wei Lai 未來的未來), the compassion and sympathy for lower income families (Can Que De Jiao Luo 殘缺的角落), etc. Of these songs, “Jan Ling Xi Men Ding 佔領西門町” couldn’t get approval from The Government Information Office to broadcast on media. In this song, Lee chanted and sang the prose lyrics, creating a unique voicing that’s considered to be of great musical value.

In a seminar, Lee openly shared his thoughts and feelings with artists from the new generation, “Producing music is actually a super tough job. Not everyone will like your music, yet you’re seeking for people’s applause. However, even if there are positive feedback from just one or two people, they serve as the best reward. Don’t go after the opportunity of performing in front of a million people, instead, I think it’s more important and worthier to identify your audience and have some people who support you. Like what you’re doing, believe in what you’re doing, have passion, and keep up that passion.”

Even after all these years since his first-time making music at the age of 26, Lee still feels the excitement every time when he enters the recording studio as if he’s setting his foot in for the first time. Lee believes that only true passion will allow one to continue on the path of making music. He also thinks that whatever he does in every present moment will eventually come back to him in the future.

Lee thinks that his music influences are from western rock music, which was the object of his study and imitation in the process of training his music acumen. He thinks that the essential of rock is its “literary spirit”, which is the compassion towards the society and human beings. Lee has been fully focused on behind the scene productions for over 35 years, and he has also been developing talents and trying new and different possibilities. Lee has expressed in an interview that, “I don’t like to do something that’s already popular, neither do I want to repeat doing what’s done in the past. Whether the works are criticizing, reflecting, or caring about the world, they’re done with the intention of enriching people’s spirits. I hope everyone can receive some kind of mental comfort from my work, even if they are just sensual pleasures.” Lee doesn’t want to retire just yet, for he thinks it’s happy to be producing music. He thinks that being able to write songs with talented singers, writers, and musicians is the most beautiful opportunity and luck he has earned in his life.

Regarding stage performances, Lee made presence at Da-Yu Lo’s 2018 series concert “Wednesday Club: Party with Da-Yu Lo and Music Maniacs”. As Lee set foot on stage, the audience cheered. Lee told everyone at the concert, “there are a lot of interesting memories that Da-Yu and I share. Music is our language and means of communication. After writing ‘Tomorrow Will Be Better 明天會更好’, I wrote another song ‘Wei Lai De Wei Lai 未來的未來’, in which there’s a line ‘告訴我,明天不會變得更壞’. I did this to have conversations with Da-Yu; in my mind, he’s the best lyricist in the Chinese music industry”. Other than that, Lee will also participate in the “Taiwan A+ Love Music Festival in 2019” together with Matilda Tao, Sky Wu, Julia Peng, Maggie Chiang, showing care and support for AIDS patients.
